Year 6 French At SOUTHFIELD

French  Term 1 - La date  -  The date

The children have been using a programme called 'Language Angels' to help them with their journey learning French.  They have been playing games and singing songs to encourage learning and make it fun.

This term our topic has been 'La date'.  Days of the week, months of the year and numbers 1 - 31 are being introduced, revised and consolidated so, by the end of the unit, pupils will have the knowledge and skills to say the date and when their birthday is in French.

We have been achieving this by combining ICT skills and French, using PowerPoint and recording and embedding our voices into the presentations too.  We have also been using a block-based coding programme called Scratch, to create short animations where the characters speak in French.  These programmes aid writing (typing), speaking and listening skills in French.

This is a fantastic piece of code by Lois.

La date

Today in French we played a game to help memorise our French sentences.  Two policemen had to ask each person in their team "Quelle est la date aujourd'hui?"  The children had to answer "Aujourd'hui, c'est lundi."  If the policeman heard this reply  they moved onto the next person until they heard "Aujourd'hui, c'est samedi." They had to then call out "Ding, Ding, Ding" to win a point for their team.  We all had lots of fun while learning.

We also practised our days, months and numbers by singing songs, karaoke style.

Term 2 - As-tu un animal?  -  Do you have a pet?

In this unit the children were introduced to eight pets.  The children were then taught to tell someone if they had or did not have a pet, ask somebody if they have a pet and tell someone the name of their pet in French.

To improve their spoken and written French they added conjunctions 'and' et or 'but' mais to create longer phrase.  We also introduced genders or words, where they had to add 'un' (masculine) or 'une' (feminine) to a noun where appropriate.

We used PowerPoint to create presentations to aid written work and played the 'Police' game to aid spoken work.  We were also lucky to be joined by a French Specialist from Warneford School, Ms Sayers, who is at the moment leading the lessons.

Term 3 - Les Vêtements - Clothes

We started this term by recapping previous lessons and introducing feminine items of clothes.  All items learnt today started with the determiner une (feminine).  We played a memory game where a child hid a picture of an item of clothing, encouraging the other children to guess what the item was.  If they guessed correctly it was their turn out at the front of the class.

We were learning more French clothes and today it was (masculine) words with un.  So many things to remember but repetition is the key and the children had a lot of fun playing games as a class and on their own on the Language Angel site that we use.

This week we started to learn about French verbs and how they work. We discovered that it is so different from English but as the children were taught today, there is an easy pattern to follow!  We were looking at the verbs, 'to play' and 'to wear' so that we could better understand the pattern. We then used the correct verb for 'wear' and used them to make sentences with our new words .  The children had to go round the class asking questions in French trying to find the person who had the item of clothing they were after.  The repetition of this helps to build knowledge and confidence in French speaking.

The children had fantastic fun today learning all about adding colours to their sentences about what they were wearing.

Then they practised their sentences by dressing up and having conversations.

Je porte des lunettes noires et un chapeau brun et une écharpe rouge.

Term 4 - En Classe  - In School

The children were introduced to some of their new set of vocabulary.

They were given pencil cases full of equipment and they had to tell their partner what they had in it, in French of course!

Did you know that there are three ways to say 'my' in French?  'Mon, Ma and Mes'.   These are 'Possessive Adjectives'.  The children learned how to use them today with their class vocabulary, then we played bingo on the interactive board.

We have been recapping the items in our pencil case and the children had to write the words, in French on the board.  They did very well.

We have been spending time learning how to say, Yes, I have -  Oui, j'ai.  Now we were looking at the negative, No, I don't have - Non, je n'ai pas de.

The children had to ask and answer questions as to what they had or didn't have in their pencil case.

Term 5 - Le week-end  -  The weekend.

Today the children were introduced to  Quelle heure est-il? - What time is it, and then how to answer by saying  Il est --- heurs - it is .........   The children chose a time on the clock and the class tried to guess what time it was.

Can you say in French what time is being displayed in the picture?
